Mary: last days and goodbye

Hello again.
The last days of the course were so interesting because we did "Observation Classes".
In my case, I went to an elementary class with Georgina, one of my teachers.
There were only three students in class: a japanese girl and two men, from Brasil and Turkey.
All of them had a lower english level but a high motivation for learning the language.
There were lot of thinks that I liked about the class, for example how Georgina encouraged the students for speaking and, although they were grammar classes, she paid lot of atention to the pronunciation and the grammar practice through dialogues and speaking activities.
Another aspect of the class that I liked was about listening activities. I noticed that the teacher put the listenings twice, and after the first one (instead of going directly to solve the exercise) she always ask students for the gist. Then, after listening the audio again, students had to solve the activity. I asked Georgina about this and why she did it and she told me that, with listening activities, students feel stressed and nervous and, with this technique, students don't feel this pression at first, and it helps them to relax and listen better.
And, the course came to the end. I'm a little bit sad and happy at the same time, cause I've learnt lots of things and I've met teachers from other countries for sharing ideas. Goodbye everyone and thanks for reading!!

Miguel - Última semana de curso

Durante esta segunda semana, en la academia estuvimos trabajando cosas más prácticas sobre nuestras clases. CLIL se usa cuando quieres dar tu asignatura en un idioma que no es el tuyo, en este caso hablamos del inglés. Hemos visto varias estrategias para acceder a los alumnos. Pero me gusta algunos conceptos que estamos viendo porque van orientados a lo que buscamos en nuestro centro. Nos han hablado de la pirámide de Bloom y hay unas partes altas de esa pirámide donde aparecen términos como crear, analizar, evaluar y aplicar. En principio son estas partes las que tenemos que trabajar con los alumnos para que al final ellos lleguen a ser independientes en su aprendizaje.

Para ello, hemos aprendido varias técnicas y programas informáticos, hemos realizado sesiones prácticas y varios juegos. Ha sido una semana llena de trabajo, pero también de buen ambiente, gracias al grupo de profesores que teníamos, llenos de ganas de aprender.

Os dejo una foto de unas de las sesiones, donde estamos realizando un juego de vocabulario. También os dejo una foto del merecido título. Agradecer a mi profesora Jackie por ayudarnos en todo lo que necesitábamos y valorar esta experiencia como algo muy positivo. Me llevo muchas cosas aprendidas, que juntas con las del año pasado, van formando un amplio conocimiento sobre CLIL y de como se debe dar una clase en un idioma extranjero.

Miguel - Fín de semana

During the last weekend we were walking around. In London you can find everything you want. If you want crowded places you only have to go to Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square. There are a lot of theaters but where there were more people was in one where the new play about Harry Potter is being playing. It is said if you want to see the play, you have to book in advance at least almost one year.

But if in its stead, You prefer to be in a peaceful place, you don't have to go fare away from this crowded places, for example we found a park where workers were having their lunch and in the same place some boys were playing trying to catch some doves.

Mary- martes 23 y miércoles 24

 Hola a todos.
Tanto ayer como hoy en la escuela hemos trabajado la pronunciación y la entonación.
Ambos aspectos son muy importantes para el correcto aprendizaje de la lengua, aunque, tal y como nos han dicho nuestros profesores pueden ser complicados a la hora de explicarlos a los alumnos.
En primer lugar,hemos repasado la tabla fonética que contiene todos los sonidos en inglés y hemos visto las diferentes teorías que existen sobre entonación.
Después nos hemos puesto manos a la obra y hemos realizado varias actividades que han sido muy divertidas. Hemos realizado una en la que debíamos salir de un laberinto de palabras escogiendo solo las de una determinad entonación. También hemos jugado a adivinar palabras o frases solamente viendo su transcripción fonética y hemos realizado juegos de entonación bastante divertidos.
En definitiva, mis profesores con estas actividades o juegos han hecho que algo bastante denso de enseñar, como es la fonética, haya resultado muy ameno y motivador.

Respecto a mi tiempo libre he visitado una galería de fotografía muy chula, cerca de Oxford street y he dado un largo paseo por Little Venice, una zona muy bonita con canales y barcos que merece la pena visitar.

Mary: viernes19- fin de semana- lunes 22

¡Hola de nuevo!
Tanto el pasado viernes como hoy lunes mis clases han tratado de cómo utilizar el listening en nuestras aulas de una manera actual y motivadora a través de canciones y videos.
Respecto a las canciones, además del "fill in the gaps" que tradicionalmente utilizamos, hemos realizado distintas actividades que creo que pueden ser bastante motivadoras para nuestros alumnos. En una de ellas,la que más me ha gustado, nuestro profesor Grant nos ha repartido tarjetas con imágenes de la canción "What a wonderful world" y nosotras teníamos que ordenar las imágenes según cómo iban apareciendo en la canción. Ha sido muy divertida y de este modo, el profesor puede comprobar si los alumnos han comprendido la canción.
En cuanto a trabajar el listening mediante vídeos, hemos utilizado una web llamada "Ted talks". En ella podemos encontrar conferencias y charlas de corta duración de diferentes temas de actualidad y niveles. Para ello podemos introducir antes de ver el vídeo algunas expresiones y vocabulario que queramos trabajar y tras ver la conferencia, hacer distintas actividades sobre la misma. Me ha parecido muy útil esta plataforma y al llegar a España la investigaré más a fondo.
Respecto a mi fin de semana, sábado visité algunos mercadillos como el Broadway Market y el Spitalfieds Market, y domingo fui a un festival de comida y música en vivo llamado AliPali Festival que me gustó mucho.

Juan- Cheltenham day 13

Free day with my host family, Janet and Andy joined for a nice sightseeing day around the county. We were in Gloucester, Tewkesbury were we ate fish & chips, Stow on the Wold and at the end Bourton on the Water, were we had a really incredible cream tea.

Good morning friends!
Today we had the comeback of one of the greatest teacher we have had (if not the greatest). Graham Workman gave as a really interesting lesson, as usual... Now, we can use a lot of different type of diagrams in our own lessons. He has also given us a lot of materials to use. A very kind teacher, I hope next year I will see him again.

Miguel - días 2, 3 y 4

¡Hola de nuevo!

Estos días en la escuela hemos aprendido un poquito más sobre CLIL. Nos han enseñado que hay varios tipos de lecciones de CLIL, unas más estrictas donde se imparte la clase en inglés en todo momento y unas más suaves donde usas el inglés en determinadas partes de la clase, tal y como dice mi compañero Juan en una de sus entradas. 

También hemos visto diferentes estrategias para impartir una clase con el método CLIL y ayer vimos un programa que me pareció bastante interesante. Seguramente lo utilice en el futuro. Se trata del programa "Quizlet", el cual también existe en app. El objetivo del programa es aprender vocabulario. Es el profesor el que introduce todas las palabras y luego su significado y el propio programa desarrolla juegos para que los alumnos las aprendan más fácilmente.

En relación a mi tiempo libre, hasta hoy viernes hemos tenido mucha suerte con el tiempo. La gente sale a pasear y a disfrutar de ello. Nosotros hemos tenido la visita de mi cuñada Carmen y que mejor que visitar los sitios que haciendo un poquito de ejercicio. Os dejo una foto del recorrido que hicimos donde visitamos St Paul, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Borough Market, Shakespeare's Globe y finalmente la Tate Modern. 

Mary- At school

Hello everyone!
Today has been a busy day at school. At first, with our teacher Grant, we've learnt how to introduce new vocabulary at the english class, and we've played vocabulary games like "taboo". It has been funny!
Then, with Jo, we' ve done the same but with grammar. We've learnt how to introduce new grammar structures in a different way as the traditional one. For example, instead of boarding the structure at first, in this technique boarding is the last step. I've found this class very useful.
Finally, with Georgina, at the language improvement class, we've learnt some idioms and chunks and we've done some activities and games using them.
After school, I've gone to Foyles, my favourite book shop and I've bought some books. Now, it's reading time so... Goodbye!

Juan - Cheltenham day 11

Today John Lee could not attend the lecture so instead of him we had Neil Adams,who showed us the English curriculum. It was a bit boring at the start but then it became more and more interesting  as we saw the aims of the curriculum and the AFL assessment. It is really important to make the students active, to motivate them, and of course to make them feel important in the assessment process.

After lunch time it was full of surprises, we did a lot of experiments, all of them were really interesting to me. I am sure I will put in practice some of them during my lessons

Juan - Cheltenham day 10

Today we had Damian O'donovan, we did English language training. We improved our general English level. We had to do a lot of activities. All of them speaking in English while he was taking notes of our mistakes.

At the end he shown us all the common mistakes that foreigners usually make. It was a good test to control our skills

Trip to Bath
I highly recommend you to go to Bath, unlike Cardiff, it was a very picturesque, historic, and beautiful city.
We visited the Roman Baths, where we could taste the mineral water flowing from down earth.

Today we had a trip to Wales, we visited a coal mine, the Big Pit National Coal. It made me think how fortunate we are to have such a good employment. They worked in really tough, difficult and dangerous conditions. The best thing... See how they taught each other, how they protected, they were really a brotherhood.

After that, we went to Cardiff, It has a very beautiful castle and docks, but in my opinion it is not a really charming city
